K, San Antonio TX (2/5/2012) “You know what? We walked
right in during brunch hour and got a large table immediately. Do
you know how hard it is to find a decent brunch spot where you don't
have to wait to be seated? Seriously, brunch can eat hours of your
weekend. Service was GREAT. Very friendly and willing to give you
all the info you need about the menu. They bring rolls out to your
table, and they're obviously modified rolls, but they're very tasty,
a bit like if a normal dinner roll and a steamed asian bun had a
baby.
I had a breakfast sandwich of sorts, and my egg was overcooked,
but the sauces had a great flavor. My companion had a waffle, and
she noticed the texture was different, but I thought it tasted really
light. Normally waffles make me feel like I swallowed a block of
cement, but not THIS waffle!
It wasn't cheap diner fare, although the ambiance was very casual.
What I mean here is that, while the food itself isn't anything fancy,
it costs a bit more than the diner equivalent. But you're paying
to get RNs to plan your meal for you, and make it using modified
ingredients. In my mind, it's worth the cost on occasion.
They also have tons of bread and SAMPLES. You can try just about
anything they sell. Oh yeah--they also sell gluten free cookie dough.
And I kind of want some right now. I also want to try their pizzas.
They ship, for all your friends who want gluten free goodies around
the country. But if you're local, they're in a really nice part
of town--near the Witte Museum, Brackenridge Park, etc.” |

F (2/5/2012) “Went expecting sandwiches, but found
that they are only on the lunch menu. So we ordered the meat lovers
pizza with pesto-cilantro and bell peppers and turned out rather well.
A little crunchy crust but that's a personal dislike. also if you
go on a Friday you get a free glass of wine or beer. The limeaid is
a sweet lovers fantasy great taste with a nice kick of lime.
BUT IF ANYTHING DO NOT SKIP OUT ON THE DESSERTS, they are what
make this place a standout place to eat even if you have no issue
with gluten or allergies. The chocolate cake was tasty as it had
seemed to use coconut milk in it to give a good mix of flavors,
add a topping of candied pecans.” |

D, San Antonio TX (2/3/2012) “This is the best place
in the world. It may sound silly, but if you're gluten intolerant,
you probably get it: it's amazing to be able to choose anything I
want off a menu with no worries. And everything tastes amazing, too.
Every other gluten-free bread that I've tried has been . . . lacking.
Either too dense, leaving a heavy feeling in my stomach, or too much
like cardboard. Little Aussie's bread is wonderful. My family and
friends who have tried it and usually eat wheat bread say it tastes
just as good as "normal" bread. And they have this wonderful
cake that's made of cookies. I just wish they had it available more.” |

Erik
S, Cedar Rapids IA (1/30/2012) “We were in town for
a couple days and wish we could take this place home with us. Actually,
you can! They sell cookie dough and other unbaked items. An all-around
amazing place for food, gluten-free or otherwise. The menu is pretty
diverse, and they offer specials like pizza night too. We also found
out that The Cove, a highly regarded restaurant also in San Antonio,
gets gluten free bread from Little Aussie, so if nothing else take
their word for it!” |

R, San Antonio TX (1/25/2012) “My son is Gluten intolerant.
He thought he would never eat good bread again, until he tasted The
Little Aussie's bread. It's wonderful! Everything there that we've
tried has not been " just okay" , but excellent. We tried
the lemon cake and it was dairy and gluten free. Coulda fooled me!
Honestly, it was better than a "regular" cake. It was moist
and creamy and a perfect balance of sweet/tart. The brownies. OMG!
The brownies!!!! We love you, Rita. Never leave San Antonio.” |

pizza in San Antonio, gluten-free or not.” |

S, Friendswood TX (10/03/2011) “My wife is gluten
free and we went here with family on our way through town for brunch.
She could not stop talking about the food the whole way home. She
has kind of a problem with stealing food off of people's plates and
this is the first time she has been able to try everything. The rest
of our family loved it as well.” |

S, San Antonio TX (08/26/2011) “After much pestering
from a friend to check this place out, I ended up visiting The Little
Aussie Bakery yesterday. I was expecting for it to be just 'meh',
but it was amazing. The bread was FLUFFY. Fluffy gluten free bread?!
Am I awake?? They put a roll out on the table which I immediately
stuffed down my throat, and then they brought out my lamb sandwich.
The bread was delicious, not to mention the succulent lamb. I also
bought a pasta bake to take home and freeze for later. What a wonderful
little wheat free establishment. I totally didn't expect the owners
to actually be Australian, but sure enough, they were, (which is kind
of cool, I'd rather be in Australia than San Antonio though). They
offer day old loaves of bread / muffins / hamburger buns / hotdog
buns for $4.50 on a rack to the left of the register. I can't wait
to go back and try the cupcakes...... *drool*” |

W. (7/3/2011) “This is my second visit to 'The Little
Aussie'. The first time I went we ordered a pizza with 'a lot'. It
was good! This time we showed up for Sunday brunch. We had the Quiche
& Salad, and the Vegetable Bake. The Quiche wasn't what I expected,
must be the lack of gluten, yet it did not take away from the taste!
It was a spinach quiche, very light with a flaky crispy crust. The
salad was served with their house dressing that had a nice sweet zing
to it. The Vegetable bake was also very good with a layer of veggies
on the bottom and macaroni noodles with marinara sauce and cheese
on top, also served with salad. Both came with slices of their gluten
free bread and all was yummy! The best though was the cherry bread
served as an appetizer, I could have eaten a whole loaf! I look forward
to returning to 'The Little Aussie'.” |

“My wife is gluten free and I am not. We currently live
in San Francisco and it's hard to find gluten free menu items at most
restaurants here. When we were visiting family in San Antonio we couldn't
believe there was an entirely gluten free restaurant! We weren't that
hungry, so we just got a small pizza and it was delicious. Couldn't
believe it was gluten free. Next time we are in SA, will definitely
come here more than once!” |

“Let me first say that my fiance (who is GF) and I live in
Michigan. We were in San Antonio for a friend's wedding and while
we were there we decided to try a little restaurant called The Little
Aussie Bakery. It took us awhile to find the place (apparently our
GPS did not like the address), but we are so glad we did! BEST GF
BREAD WE HAVE EVER TASTED! So much so, that we stopped by before
we left to go home and got a bunch of bread and sandwiches to-go.
Although some places in MI have come close, we cannot find a better
GF bread than The Little Aussie.” |

R.S.,
St Louis MO (6/12/2011) “Terrific gluten-free bakery
and cafe. Scratch that. Terrific bakery and cafe period. The evidence:
My grandfather and I, neither of us gluten-intolerant, were visiting
relatives in New Braunfels, and they took us here for lunch. Now,
my grandfather is not so much a foodie. He likes McDonald's. A lot.
We try to expand his palate, but you know what they say about old
dogs and new tricks. He's 86. He ordered the chicken pie, and I ordered
the lamb sandwich, both of which came with salad. My grandfather doesn't
like salad. Until this salad, due to the standout house dressing.
"This is the best salad dressing I've ever had," he said.
And, "This is the first time I've eaten the salad and taken the
lunch [the pie] home." My grandfather does NOT usually rave about
food. But, by the time we got to a slice of the caramel pecan chocolate
cake, he was saying things like, "This is the best meal I've
ever had, and I've eaten at the Four Seasons," and "Now
I know why God has let me live for 86 years. I can go now." And
my own props: the bread is really great! Shockingly, given its gluten-free
recipe. Everything was impeccably fresh. It's not boundary-pushing
haute cuisine, but it's comforting, perfectly executed bakery fare.
And the cake was TOTALLY worth it! Attentive service, cozy atmosphere,
prices that are appropriate given the higher costs of some gluten-free
ingredients. I'd go back for sure, gluten-free or not! As for my grandfather,
well, he kissed the owner on the way out. He'll be bragging about
that for months.” |

(May 27, 2011) “This place has the best bread EVER!!
Not the best GF bread, ... just the best bread! Plus they have great
meals and awesome cakes and desserts. There is something new every
time I go!! The staff are also very knowledgeable and willing to answer
all sorts of questions. Pros: Great service, reasonable prices, great
atmosphere, knowledgeable staff. Cons: Can get a bit slow sometimes
(but TOTALLY worth the wait. I mean, everything is made from scratch,
what can you expect?)” |

Kristi
U (April, 2011) “I cannot wait to go back and try
more! The gypsy chicken salad with the lime tang dressing was wonderful.
The freshness of the ingredients keep me smiling whenever I think
of the little bakery and cafe. My son loved his peanut butter and
jelly sandwich. We shared a delicious brownie. I mean, really delicious.
It is just melt in your mouth, moist, full of that brownie flavor
we all love... Soooo good! The staff was so sweet to us from start
to finish. My son wanted to try one of the limeades, and since he
thought it was a little too tart, the server asked him if he could
fix it for him. When the new limeade came back, my son had an ear-to-ear
smile. That is good service! The environment is quaint, warm and inviting.
Overall, this place is great, and I just want to try more and more.” |

Shawn
M, San Antonio TX (Feb 2011) “WooHoo - many times
over! Delicious, gluten-free food (including decadent cakes!) in a
charming old house-converted-to-eatery ; friendly and competent staff;
cool clientele! After spending a grueling but fun day with a friend,
hiking through Brackenridge Park and the zoo, I insisted we drop by.
While the exterior is an eye-popping two-tone green, the interior
is austere and tranquil, with wood plank floors, airy curtains and
sparse art. It was a welcome environment.
We were immediately drawn to the desserts: in a display case, by
the register - beautiful, sumptuous-looking pies and cakes - such
an assortment that a decision was difficult to reach. Ultimately,
we chose to split a house salad with orange dressing; a veggie pizza;
and two varieties of layer cake. Salad was mixed greens with a variety
of other vegetables: crisp and tasty, and served with a few slices
of yummy, tender garlic bread with a chewy crust. The house dressing
was light, orange-y. The pizza - oh my, THAT pizza!! It was topped
with baby spinach, sliced cherub tomatoes, black olives, mushrooms,
sweet red and yellow bell peppers, red onions, globs of mozzarella,
and crumbled feta - all atop a chewy, flavorful crust. We also each
received a complimentary glass of wine that evening, a pretty decent
Australian red.
And last but definitely not least was our dessert: two slices of
layer cake which the extremely hospitable staff cut into half for
us, so we could mix-n-match: chocolate-orange-mocha; and white almond
something with cream cheese filling, iced with an almond-y glaze.
They were both extremely good. At one point, too, a couple that
had been seated got up and began dancing to the background music:
gliding across the floor, swirling and twirling.
So the bottom line? I'm way too new to this "wheat intolerance"
business to have been able to adapt my favorite bread, pizza crust,
cookie, and cake recipes to the alternative flours; until I master
those skills, it's vastly reassuring to know Little Aussie has my
back!"

“I love this place. Been here a couple of times and
we plan on taking my mother-in-law when she comes to town at the end
of the month. The cafe itself is quaint. Mismatch furniture that makes
you feel like you are in someone's home. Service is happy and friendly
and the food...mmm, very good.
In case you haven't been Little Aussie Bakery is a gluten free
restaurant. When I first told my husband I wanted to try it out
he was a bit on the fence. Anything "free" makes him think
no taste. He was wrong and rightfully admitted it. First time we
went there I ordered the chicken salad and he ordered a sandwich...roast
beef maybe? I can't remember. The thing I did remember was the chicken
was so flavorful and succulent I think I might have been drooling.
The bread that comes with the salad was delish and it was gluten
free. The funny thing was that even though I ordered the salad and
my husband a sandwich with chips...my meal was heartier. I kept
eating well after he finished his plate. Hah!
They have a nice baked good selection here. That day we went home
with several types of cookies and have stopped in a few other times
to pick up some cookies on the way to the park.
The thing we need to try is their pizza. They have some sort of
pizza party deal on Friday's that we have yet to try....but we will
eventually!” |

“My husband and I took a weekend trip to San Antonio
with two other couples recently. One of our friends mentioned seeing
the reviews here and wanted to give Little Aussie a try. I could not
have been more happy that we did! We didn't even know that the whole
place was Gluten free until looking over the menu - but with items
like waffles and french toast, how could you know?! Three out of six
in our party had the french toast and it was DELICIOUS and topped
cinnamon & sugar and fresh fruit.
Our waiter was super nice and when I was trying to decide which
dessert I wanted, he described every item to me in the case. I decided
on a strawberry cream layer cake. It was to die for. Talk about
melt in your mouth!! I let my friends try and they agreed - it was
delicious. We also tried the chocolate pecan pie and the cookies
& cream cake - both yummy!
I'd definitely like to go back and try their daily menu!” |

“What a treat! I brought my 12 year old Celiac daughter
here and her words were it was "heaven". She had the roast
beef sandwich and I had the "pie of the day". Both were
delicious and the bread was to die for. We will definitely be coming
back soon (and ordering things online!)” |

“Nice, quiet, quaint, and cozy establishment with Great
Taste. My family is new to the GF world and finding this place has
been a Godsend. My favorite is the Bloke "lamb" Sandwich
with a huge side salad. When I meet GF families this is the first
place they recommended. I love it. The staff has been very helpful
to me and the family in educating us in the new world of GF products.
I highly recommend it for it's taste, service, and family atmosphere.
For the last month, I have visited this place weekly to eat and buy
it's goods since my daughter has been informed of her gluten intolerance.
Thanks for being there!” |

“I love Little Aussie!! It's small and quaint with
the most awesome employees. It's a place to just kick up your feet
and enjoy a pastry or meal. It's a good place to go especially after
walking around Brackenridge park behind it. They make the best Pavlova,
I had never had heard of it before, but once I tried it I was hooked.
They have the best brunch selection. I had their French toast and
loved loved it.” |

“ Anne told us about a special gluten free restaurant
in San Antonio called The Little Aussie Bakery at 3610 Avenue B. Unfortunately,
we were not able to visit in person during our visit, but I checked
out their website upon returning home and then ordered some bread,
pizza crusts, and hamburger buns; all of which were delicious! Rita
and John, originally from Australia, have a wonderful restaurant,
staff, menu and bakery, so check them out.....” |

Dr.
Stephen Wangen, Author of Healthier without Wheat
August 2nd,2009 Seattle WA “ Rita, the Aussie
founder and baker,........sat me down with a few slices of her famous
bread, and I definitely wasn't disappointed.
It is without a doubt some of the finest bread that I've ever had.
During our conversation I came to realize that she not only has a
true passion for preparing gluten free baked goods, but a deep understanding
of the food science behind milling and using grains for baking. That
may be what sets her products apart from many others.
I also had an outstanding pizza from The Little Aussie Bakery, and
it was even dairy free!
If you are ever in San Antonio then you should stop in and visit The
Little Aussie Bakery. But even if you can't get there, give some serious
consideration to having her ship you some of her products so that
you
can try them for yourself........” Go to Dr. Wangen's Blog and

Janes (Gluten-Free Travel Examiner)
July 13th, 2009 Atlanta GA San Antonio - A secret gluten-free
gem in Texas “....The 100% gluten-free menu is not extensive,
but it includes varied sandwiches (made with on site baked bread),
pizzas, soups, salads, lasagna, garlic bread and even a leg of lamb.
To say it was overwhelming to stare at a menu that had nothing off
limits to me is quite an understatement. It would be
hard for anyone being able to keep from getting teary eyed the first
time they are able to do this....
.... After ordering, customers get to nosh on house baked gluten-free
garlic bread that is soft in the middle with a crunchy crust. There
is no odd taste or texture to the bread - it is simply wonderful.....
....The lasagna of the day when we were there was chicken with béchamel
sauce, which was outstanding! My husband enjoyed his personal size
gluten-free pizza, though the spices on it were a little too hot for
my taste. The side salad served with the lasagna had an interesting
sweet citrus dressing...” Read the whole review. click
